Overview



National Museum, Lagos was opened in 1957. It is located at Onikan, opposite the MUSON Centre, near Tafawa Balewa Square.
There are two ‘permanent exhibitions’ currently on display:

  • Dynasty and Divinity: Ife in Ancient Nigeria. Nigerian Arts in the Life Cycle.
  • Nigerian Governments: Yesterday and Today.

Courtyard Exhibition: Old Lagos, Nigeria’s Biotic Communities, Some Declared Monuments in Nigeria, Objects of Hospitality in Traditional Nigerian Society, Pictorial Exhibition of the 8,000 years old Dufuna Canoe and Masquerades in Lagos State. Contemporary artworks are displayed on a continual basis in the Temporary Gallery. Contemporary Arts and Crafts, Books etc, are available on sale at the Museum.
The National Museum Kitchen serves traditional Nigerian dishes.

The museum is one of 36 museums, located across Nigeria and administered by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.The Commission also manages and maintains over 63 National Monuments as well as two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
